Treadmill running.

We’ve all read the articles on the benefits and disadvantages of treadmill running. Ho-hum. We’ve all gotten in that hamster mode and mindlessly ground out the miles, maybe with an old playlist that includes music from our youth or a long movie streaming. We’ve adjusted the incline, changed the pace, and gotten on the treadmill with plans and goal-directed intentions.

At some point, we’ve all hated it.

As I write, it’s nineteen degrees outside. I’ve run in colder, but today, I’m wanting none of it. I’m sure I would warm up without any problem. I don’t feel like running outside today. Some would suggest that I wait until later when the sun has pushed the temperatures into the low thirties. Unfortunately, I’ll be at work, so running later is not a possibility.

That’s why we have a treadmill, right?!

After this post, I’ll head down to the basement, put on some classic rock, and grind out thirty minutes. The “grind” is less about treadmill running and more about my energy today. After a good run yesterday and a super busy day at the store where I work, I’m just not feeling like running. Again, there are those who might suggest that I take a day off. They could argue that my body is trying to tell me something.

Nah, I’m being lazy. I had plenty of time with YouTube this morning. Plenty of time to sip my coffee. Pleny of time to lounge around with my dog. All I needed to do was get moving sooner. And as I’ve been apt to say lately, “These miles don’t run themselves.”

With the tough self-love coming down hard, I’m heading down to the treadmill. I’ll warm up for five minutes and see how hard I can push some negative splits. Maybe I’ll just cruise at an easy pace.

Heck, my dog just curled up next to me. Maybe I’ll take that day…
